R.K. Narayan (1906–2001) was one of the most celebrated Indian writers in English. He is best known for his simple, humorous, and insightful portrayal of everyday life in South India. Most of his stories are set in the fictional town of Malgudi, a microcosm of Indian society. His writing combines gentle irony, subtle humour, and deep human understanding. Some of his famous works include Swami and Friends, The Guide, and Malgudi Days.

"An Astrologer’s Day" is a short story by R.K. Narayan, first published in 1947. It revolves around a street astrologer who appears to possess mysterious powers of prediction but is actually relying on observation, experience, and shrewd guessing. One evening, he unexpectedly meets a man from his past whom he believed he had murdered. He had a working analysis of mankind's troubles:
